‘I think we’ve exhausted all the decent ones,’ Jen said, placing what was left of the cards back on the table.

‘Feel you’ve learned more about me? Seen another side?’

‘I’m still getting my head around what your last meal would be.’

‘Omelettes are underrated.’

‘And boring.’

‘You really want to start this again?’ Holly jibed, poking Jen in the ribs.

‘Okay, okay. You win.’ Jen’s eyes shifted, the atmosphere between them changing in an instant, the air around them charged. ‘So, before we wrap this up, fancy going off script? One question each, nothing is off-limits.’

Holly gulped. ‘Nothing?’

‘Nope.’

Holly considered it. Only one topic struck her as hazardous. And what were the chances of Jen asking about her feelings towards her? The notion probably wasn’t even on her radar. ‘Yeah, sure. I have nothing to hide.’

Jen’s smile turned devious.

‘I assume you already have a question in mind?’ Holly asked, switching position so she was now leaning on a cushion. The only time they’d been closer was when they were kissing. Static hummed between Holly’s chest and Jen’s arm.

‘I do, actually.’

‘Why does that worry me?’ The urge to reach out and stroke Jen’s arm surged through Holly. She was so near; it would be so easy to do, but her muscles were frozen in place, her mind refusing to send the right signals.

‘You’ve already agreed. No take-backs.’

‘Let’s get this over with, then. Come on, lay it on me,’ Holly said, puffing her chest out like she was readying for battle.

Jen looked sheepish, her eyes everywhere but on Holly. ‘Right.’ She cleared her throat before taking a deep breath. Her voice was nearly a whisper. ‘Did you really touch yourself this morning or were you just winding me up earlier?’

Holly couldn’t help but laugh. ‘Really? You can ask anything, anything at all, and you settle for that?’

‘I just want to know, that’s all.’

‘Right, okay,’ Holly said with a little laugh, a hand to her face as relief flooded through her. She composed herself, her attention now on the sock of the foot tucked under her bum. She pulled at it, stalling for time. She’d said it to be daring earlier, not expecting the topic to ever come back up. She clicked her tongue to the roof of her mouth, Jen’s gaze an inferno across her skin. She nodded, deciding to part with the truth. ‘Yeah, I did. Why do you want to know?’

Jen swivelled, her position now mirroring Holly’s. For a brief moment, Holly thought she was going to take her hand and run her thumb over her open palm. It wasn’t to be, so Holly stuffed her hand down the side of the cushion, not wanting to risk the temptation of completing the gesture herself. ‘I’ve just never known anyone to be so open about it.’

‘You make it sound like it’s some dirty secret. We’re humans. It’s part of what we do.’

Jen’s eyes said she agreed. She chewed on her bottom lip, thinking. ‘Still, it’s super taboo.’

Holly shrugged. ‘I don’t think it should be.’

‘What did you think of?’ The words came out like a freight train, fast and unyielding.
